The Story Mountain

Every great story has three parts, like climbing a mountain. Authors call it the story mountain.

At the beginning, we meet the character and find out where the story happens. In the middle, a problem pops up β€” something goes wrong, or a big adventure begins. This is the most exciting part, the very top of the mountain! At the end, the problem gets solved and the story comes to a close.

When you know the three parts, you can plan any story you want to tell. Beginning, middle, end β€” up the mountain and back down!

1
Beginning
Meet the character. Where are we?
2
Middle
A problem or big adventure β€” the exciting part!
3
End
The problem is solved. The story ends.
βœ… Quick check
Where do we first meet the character?
the beginning
the middle
the end
The problem usually happens in the…
title
middle
beginning
At the end of a story, the problem is…
just starting
forgotten
solved
Characters & Feelings

A character is who a story is about. The best authors don't just tell you what a character does β€” they show you how the character feels.

Here is a writer's secret called show, don't tell. Instead of writing "She was sad," you can show it:

Tears rolled down her cheeks, and she stared at the floor.

You never said the word "sad," but the reader feels it! Showing feelings makes readers care about your character and want to keep reading.

βœ… Check your thinking
A character is…
the place a story happens
who the story is about
the last page
Which sentence shows a character is happy (without saying "happy")?
He was happy.
He felt good.
He jumped up and cheered with a giant grin.
Why do authors show feelings?
so readers care about the character
to make the story shorter
to use up paper
When Characters Talk

When a character speaks out loud in a story, that is called dialogue. Authors wrap the exact spoken words inside quotation marks, which look like this: " ".

"I found the treasure!" shouted Max.

The quotation marks go around only the words Max actually said. Everything Max spoke is tucked safely inside them. Dialogue makes your characters feel real, like you can hear them talking right off the page!

βœ… Check your thinking
Dialogue is…
when characters talk out loud
the cover of the book
a kind of animal
What do quotation marks go around?
the whole page
the character's name
only the words a character says
Which sentence shows dialogue done right?
Lola said lets go now
"Let's go now!" said Lola.
Lola "said let's go" now
Sparkle Words

Some words are tired out from being used too much β€” words like big, nice, and said. Authors trade them for sparkle words that paint a brighter picture.

big β†’ gigantic  Β·  nice β†’ wonderful  Β·  said β†’ whispered, yelled, giggled

Instead of "The big dog said hi," you could write "The gigantic dog barked hello!" The sparkle words help the reader see and hear exactly what is happening. A strong word is worth a whole sentence.

βœ… Pick the sparkle word
A sparkle word for big is…
big
gigantic
okay
Which is a stronger word than said?
said
talked
whispered
Why do authors use sparkle words?
to paint a clearer picture for the reader
to make stories boring
to hide the character
Every sentence starts with a CAPITAL letter and ends with a mark: . ? or !  Pick the one written correctly.
βœ… Editor's eye
Which sentence is written correctly?
the dog ran fast
The dog ran fast.
the dog ran fast.
Which question is written correctly?
where is my hat.
Where is my hat
Where is my hat?
Which excited sentence is written correctly?
We won the game!
we won the game
we won the game!
Story Twists

A twist is a big surprise the reader did not see coming. Twists make a story exciting and fun to remember.

Maybe the quiet dog can suddenly talk. Maybe the "monster" under the bed turns out to be a lost puppy. Maybe the treasure the hero searched for was a friend all along. A good twist makes the reader gasp β€” then smile.

The best authors plan one surprise for the middle or end of their story. What surprise will YOU hide in yours?

✍️ Plan a twist

A surprise I could put in my story:
βœ… Check your thinking
A twist is…
the first sentence
a surprise the reader didn't expect
the title
Twists make a story…
exciting and fun to remember
boring and slow
impossible to read
Real authors use these words. Can you match them to their meaning?
βœ… Word power
The character is…
where the story happens
the words spoken out loud
who the story is about
The setting is…
where and when the story happens
the main character
the last word
Dialogue is…
the cover picture
the words characters say out loud
a kind of pencil
Use everything you learned! Fill in each part, then print it to make a real book.

My Book Plan

1My book's title 2My main character (a name + one thing about them) 3The setting (where and when) 4Beginning β€” meet the character 5Middle β€” the problem or adventure 6The twist β€” a surprise! 7End β€” how the problem is solved 8Draw your cover on paper, then describe it here
